Trial By Circumcision of the Day: Anything for a scoop?: A journalist for the News Corp.-owned Papua New Guinea Post-Courier was recently awarded News Limited’s Scoop of the Year prize for obtaining access to a group of rebels fighting for the independence of the Papua and West Papua provinces of Indonesia.
And all Simon Eroro had to do was agree to be circumcised with bamboo sticks.
The Free West Papua militants required the traditional “cleansing ceremony” of Eroro before granting him any interviews.
Wining their trust by undergoing the procedure, the journalist went on to document the rebels’ cross-border movements, aiding police in their efforts to stymie the movement’s operations.
“The impact of Simon’s scoop was enormous,” said the judges overseeing the scoop competition. ” the police commissioner launched a major operation to tighten the borders and close down the [Free West Papua] refugee camps.”
